A small winery in the making
Small batch Rhône-style reds
Starting with just four acres…
Founded in 2021, Esmé takes a property passed down over generations in happier direction. We are a young family on a journey to make excellent Rhône-style wine using classic techniques.
What we are doing now:
September 11, 2024: “Happy to report that we have successfully harvested 2 tons of Syrah at 22 Brix and 3.32 ph. Grenache and Mourvèdre are looking good and soon to follow.”
— Chris
May 30th, 2022: “Believe it or not, we now have 7,944 vines in the ground on The Hill - 1900 Grenache 362, 1900 Grenache 513, 3800 Syrah 877 & 344 Mourvedre vines we planted by accident (what luck)!”
— Melissa
February 14, 2022: “Last week we mapped out our first planting site on The Hill, located at the south end of our farm. The hill has at least 7 acres of plantable space, full of rocks and well-draining soil. Now we need a lot of compost for planting… and the days to pass until our Syrah and Grenache vines arrive.”
— Melissa
March 18th, 2021: “Chris and the kids love walking around the farm, and our daughter Esme likes to lead everyone up “The Hill”. It is one of our favorite places… you can see the old farmhouse and the land surrounding you. One year and counting until vines will be a new part of the landscape. We hope Esme approves! ”
— Melissa
February 12th, 2021: “Last night was all about soil research. I overheard a statement last week on a virtual wine happy hour about the importance of potassium levels in the soil for grape growers, and how they may affect your wine’s pH. Let’s say we learned a lot about potassium last night. =)”
— Melissa
February 4th, 2021: “We are getting ready to help cut bud wood for our very first vine order. We hope to plant 2 acres of Syrah and 2 acres of Grenache in 2022, and another 2 acres of Mourvèdre in 2023.”
— Melissa
January 23rd, 2021: “Reading everything we can about Grenache and concrete tanks.”
